A tapir family in their indoor quarters
at the zoo in Stuttgart, Germany

Tapir photo © Sheryl Todd, about 1971

I always liked this picture because it looks to me almost like a tapir family living in a Japanese house. It's actually the Asian tapirs' indoor quarters in Stuttgart, Germany. The female and her subadult young are on the right, and that's most likely the male on the left. Some zoos separate pairs at night, especially while the female has a youngster. I believe this pair were allowed in the same yard along with the young one during the day. Tapirs can be unpredictable, and there are also temperamental differences among individuals. Sometimes the young are raised with both parents, while other times the males are separated. Some zoos separate a pair at night for safety's sake while they cannot be watched by keepers. Most of the time tapirs seem to get along in groups, but attacks have been known to take place.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
