Mother tapir with her baby

This mother tapir has some of the typical features of a Brazilian tapir. Her baby's camouflage is nearly complete as his stripes can barely be distinguished from the light-colored stems of the ferns under which he finds shelter. The youngster may be a lowland tapir hybrid. The mother looks almost like a lowland tapir, but not quite the norm. She may be a hybrid herself, but no-one can say for sure. The photo was taken at the Baños Zoo in Ecuador.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
