Dear Sheryl Todd,
As you already know Copenhagen Zoo and Zoological Institute at the
University of Copenhagen are involved in a conservation project in Malaysia
"Management of Krau Wildlife Reserve - Capacity Building & Human Resource
Development". Our part of the project is an evaluation of existing programs
for research, breeding, reintroduction and translocation of animals as well
as development of guidelines for future programs of the same kind. The
project is carried out together with the malaysian Wildlife Department
(DWNP) and supported by the Danish Government. In this context we have
focused a lot on the Malayan Tapir as a potential umbrella species for
future conservation research activities_in the area (Peninsula Malaysia).
Our hope is to be able to develop and raise money for a number of Malayan
Tapir research projects in the area that can be carried out together with
local researchers. We are therefore very interested in becoming part of this
talk list in order to be able to communicate directly with other "tapir
people" and to make use of all already existing experience in this field.
As for my own experience with Malayan Tapir - apart from the experience
gained through the above mentioned project in Malaysia - I can only refer to
my 16 years in Copenhagen Zoo where we have had pretty good breeding results
in the past and where we have chosen to focus on this species for research
and conservation activities in the future - ex situ as well as in situ. I am
a co-chair of the European Hippo & Tapir TAG and have been woorking with
conservation issues ex situ and in situ since 1985. In my current position
as vice director (scientific director) of Copenhagen Zoo I am responsible
for research and conservation activities in the zoo.
At the start of December Copenhagen Zoo was granted 100.000 DKK (approx.
15.000 US Dollars) for a pilot project on radio tracking of Malayan Tapirs
in Malaysia (to test the possibilities before starting real surveys). The
project will be carried out together with DWNP, and we plan to start later
this year.
This was a short introduction of my interest in joining the Tapir Talk List.
I know that you have already heard from my colleague at the Zoological
Institute, University of Copenhagen, Professor Heller. We run this project
together and try to get the best out of both worlds: the research community
and the zoo community.
I look forward to hearing from you and will keep you informed about our
activities.
Best regards
Bengt Holst

Subject: Zoo licensing in South and Central America

Dear fellow C.A.U.Z. Network members,
I have agreed to write an Essay on zoo licensing in Central and South
America for the big Zoo Encyclopedia being published this year. Could
you help me with some critical information?
- What is the name of your country and region?
- Does your country have zoo laws or accreditation? And if not, does your
country have wildlife laws with anything at all about zoos or captive
centres acquiring wild animals? If your country does have zoo laws or
accreditation, could you quote the relevant section so that I can put it
in my essay? (Be sure to include the name and date of the law.)
Even if you can provide me with it just a few sentences, that really is
all I need.
Thank you so much. If you know people in other South & Central American
countries who could help in this way, it would be very helpful if you
could give me their names and addresses. I can send you some
copies of our magazine ZOOS' PRINT in return.
With best wishes,
Sally Walker, Zoo Outreach Organisation
