To all who recently contributed to Tapir Preservation fund on behalf of my
on-going work to halt a hydro-project which would erase critical habitat for
the Central American tapir, please know how grateful I am for this
assistance. At this time, the opposition to the dam is growing in Belize,
it has taken an enormous amount of time and energy to get the issue "out
there", but I know I am speaking to an audience who realizes that the effort
is more than worth it. When do we put an end to the continuation of
fragmentation of valuable habitat? Our unified voices continue to make a
difference, and the Chalillo Dam issue is a sterling example of that. I
want to continue on a positive level. Last week, two officials from Matural
Resources Defense Council, NRDC, were in Belize. After flying over the
area, speaking to various people, and reviewing documents, they are
extremely committed to help in the fight to halt this project. I know they
have a web page, don't have the address with me at this time [note, it's
http://www.nrdc.org/nrdcpro/index.html, and there is an e-mail listed on the
page], but you might want to stay on top of that and see how you can assist
as a consolidated effort. These guys get things done - for example, were
successful in getting Fidel Castro to stop the building of a nuclear reactor
power plant not so long ago, and are being extremely successful in helping
to stop Mitsubishi from developing a huge salt mine in Laguna San Ignacio, a
pristine mating/birthing area for the Pacific Grey Whale. They were also
sucessful in getting Leonardo De Titanic to be their official spokesperson
for the 30th anniversary of Earth Day. So we are looking towards some
aggressive help against this worthless project. I want you all to know that
I am very thankful for your interest, and for your help.

Thank you.

I'd like to suggest that those who are interested in the Belize Zoo and in
tapir conservation in Belize also check out the Belize Zoo web site for
disturbing news on a planned garbage dump that would shut down the zoo:
