1. Seeking data on Malayan tapir in enriched and non-enriched settings
2. Tapir calves in camera traps? Response
3. Response: Damage on plantations?

We've had a number of interesting responses to the tapir medical problem in Guayaquil. All have been either sent to that zoo by the writer or forwarded by me. I hope to post them in the next few days as they may be of interest to the list. ~ Sheryl

Dear Sir

I am currently doing a degree in animal management at Sparsholt college in
Hampshire, England.

We have to carry out a dissertation and I have chosen a behavioural study of
Malayan tapirs.

The title is 'the captive behaviour of Malayan tapirs in an enriched and non
enriching enclosure'

I have carried out a ethogram to show their natural captive behaviour
between the hours of 8.00am to 16.00pm. This shows them to be very
inactive.
I then added browse to see if this changed their behaviour it has shown some
differences.

I was wondering if any one has carried out any enrichment on tapirs or any
studies involving Malayan tapirs.
I would be interested in any thing on activity in Malayan tapirs.

I hope you can help as i have found very little enrichment work else where
and any studies on Malayan tapirs

Your help would be greatly recieved
Elaine Taylor

Hi,

Doug Richardson's posting regarding tapir ears and the problem of
the mother chewing them raises an interesting question...

In 3+ years camera trapping out here we have photographed
(Trail Masters) many adult tapir and some fairly young tapir
but no calves - even where a lactating female has been
photographed.

I rather think Doug is correct and that young tapir
are indeed hidden away but would be interested to
know if anybody who has been camera-trapping tapir, (Malay
or other) has got images of very young animals?

On Wilson's request re plantation raiding, we quite often
get reports from irate farmers complaining about tapir
damaging the bark of rubber trees and know that traps
are sometimes set for this reason but have never heard of
gambir trees being damaged but around
Kerinci Seblat NP it is not so widely cultivate.

Debbie
