Contents of this issue
1. E-mail campaign against dam in Belize - please help
2. Feet and footprints
3. Iwokrama workshop in Guyana

Sharon Matola is asking for our help with an e-mail campaign to stop the dam in Belize. The NRDC site has made this very easy. Go to this page, fill in three lines in a form, add your signature and send:

http://www.nrdc.org/wildlife/habitat/nbelize.asp

Sharon says, "A recent report from my team said, `We found another macaw nest and tapirs were everywhere.' The more e-mails going into Duke and Fortis, the better for the tapirs. We need to pressure these people. The project must not go forward. Your communication will have strong impact. With a steadfast and unified stand, progress will be made to see that this area of tropical America will be preserved. Thank you for your help. Sharon Matola

I've added a new page to the web site. This one compares tracks of tapir species. If you can contribute photos to help out, please contact me. The pictures will be used on the web site (with credit) unless you specify otherwise. A track comparison may help identify which species is present in areas of Colombia and elsewhere. To my knowledge there is no other resource for track comparison by species.

Many thanks to those who have sent photos for this and the foot comparison.

Subject: Regional technical workshop on wildlife in the Guiana Shield
Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2000 09:40:21 -0300

Dear everyone,

As part of IwokramaÆs Sustainable Human Development and Forest Research
Programmes, the Iwokrama International Centre is planning to hold a regional
technical workshop on ôCRITICAL ISSUES IN THE CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE & EQUITABLE USE OF WILDLIFE IN THE GUIANA SHIELDö from the 4th to the 8th of December 2000. The objective of this workshop is to bring together practitioners working on the conservation and sustainable and equitable use of wildlife in the countries of the Guiana Shield to share experiences and discuss several critical issues relating to wildlife management in the Guiana Shield (http://www.sdnp.org.gy/iwokrama/Wildlife/wildlife.html).

Background paper and organizational structure for the workshop

We have prepared a draft background paper and organizational structure for
the above workshop (the paper is available as a pdf file from
http://www.sdnp.org.gy/iwokrama/Wildlife/Workshop_Outline.pdf). We would
welcome any comments that you may have on this document.

Call for papers for oral and poster presentations of case studies

Each day of the workshop will involve discussions based on illustrative case
studies and overviews. We decided that the case studies would take two
forms û oral presentations and posters. We are asking that abstracts for
these presentations be sent to us by August 1st 2000. The call for papers
can be found at
http://www.sdnp.org.gy/iwokrama/Wildlife/Call_for_Papers.html.

Financial support for persons attending the workshop

Included with the call for papers is an application for financial support
for persons who wish to attend in order to give oral or poster
presentations; this financial support will be given according to the
following criteria:

_ Relevance of the proposed oral or poster presentation to the
workshop goals and objectives
_ Improving the attendance of the workshop by stakeholders that
otherwise would find it difficult to attend, especially indigenous peoples,
the private sector, and students.

The grants would partially cover the costs of attending the workshop. We
hope that you will be able to advertise the workshop to as many people as
possible, and we hope to hear from you soon.

Yours,

Graham
