HOME OF TAPIRS AND U'WA PEPOLE

The Rainforest Action Network (RAN) provides a page where you can fill in a few blanks and send a letter to protest. This can hopefully help stop impending drilling in Colombia by Occidental Petroleum on the land of the UÆWa people. I checked with a Colombian tapir contact to verify what's going on. I found out:

The land "is located in the north-eastern portion of the Eastern Cordillera, facing the eastern plains, and it is an area of very high biodiversity. It is probably the northernmost place for T. pinchaque but no records exist. It is also an area with T. t. terrestris."

'The U_Wa people have announced that they will commit `Comunal suicide' if the drilling begins, meanwhile they have come down and closed the roads as a protest, but the army and the police are trying to control the situation. There have been several fights with bow and arrows against the police, who responded with tear gas and gunfire."

RAN points out that Vice-President Gore is stockholder in Occidental, and this letter campaign is directed to asking him to get Occidental to stop the drilling, which could begin any day.

Hi. My name is Irene Choi and I would like to join your newslist.

I am currently doing research at the Woodland park Zoo for a zoo animal
behavior class at the University of Washington. My research is on Malayan
tapir calf development and mother-calf interactions. Heidi Frohring one
of the malayan tapir keepers suggested I could learn more about the tapirs
from your group.

Subject: Reply on naming of male and female from Craig C. Downer, tapir talk

Dear Sonia: Concerning the naming of the male and
female tapirs, this is a difficult question. In some
parts of the Andes they call them Sacha Vaca, which is
a hybridized term between Quichua and Spanish, the
latter referring to "Cow". I thought about calling
them mare and stallion, since this would be closer
taxonimically, but this wouldn't do since these terms
are very associated with horses. Cow and Bull would
likewise be too associated with cattle. Same with colt
and calf. In Spanish the solution would be simple,
simply put a generative ending after tapir, hence
tapira for female and tapiro for male, and the young
one could be tapirita or tapirito according to its
gender. Best wishes, Craig
