This is an early representation of a juvenile tapir with spots. The caption reads, "Le Tapir," although the animal shown here has cloven hooves, unlike those of a tapir. See the entire engraving for a possible explanation. The picture of an adult tapir is given a different name.


All tapirs are endangered species.
