A curious Asian tapir in Artis Zoo,
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Photo by Sheryl Todd, about 1971

An Asian tapir stands in the mud on a cloudy day in Amsterdam. This is the same animal that can be seen on the Tapir Gallery Opening Page. Moments after this picture was taken, it flexed its snout into the air in a gesture known in German as "flehmen." A companion sits in the moat at right - you can barely see one of its haunches.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
