Drinking tapirs
in Artis Zoo,
Amsterdam, Netherlands

| Detail of the one on the left |

I took a photo of these two lowland tapirs drinking from their moat at Artis Zoo in Amsterdam about 1970. Around 1979, I did the painting. When I find a good copy of the original photo, I'll install it on the site and link it from here. It shows the water dripping back into the moat, making rings, which I think is very neat.

The female is on the left, male on the right. In the caption to the photos of the hybrid tapir in the zoo in San Francisco, I mentioned that I hadn't seen such a demarcated "raccoon mask" on any other tapir. This is true. Although the female of this pair displays a bit of that mask-like marking, it wasn't as pronounced on the original tapir as it is here. Somewhere between photo, painting, slide photo of the painting, print from the slide, and finally the scan, the contrast intensified.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
