A mountain tapir
at the Los Angeles Zoo

Photo taken by Sheryl Todd, about 1971, at the Los Angeles Zoo

This rare and perilously endangered animal strides through its enclosure at the zoo. While the Malayan, Baird's and Brazilian tapirs usually do well in a captive environment, very few zoos have had success keeping the mountain tapir. The white lips are typical of this species.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
