Lowland tapir on a postage stamp from Baeza, Ecuador

In 1959, Baeza, Ecuador, celebrated its 400th year with a stamp of Tapirus villosus. Over the years, different species of tapir have acquired various scientific names. Baeza is located at an elevation of about 6,000 feet, and some sources have given Tapirus villosus as the mountain tapir. It's really a lowland tapir, and today we call this animal Tapirus terrestris.

All tapirs are endangered species.
Saving tapirs helps save the rainforest.
